About Taking the GRE
The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) General Test is a multiple-choice admissions test that is required for most graduate schools. In China, the GRE is a split-administration test, which means that the first part, the essay, is taken on the computer, and the second part, verbal and quantitative, is paper-based. In other parts of the world it's a different format so make sure the school you choose offers you the right version. The test consists of three scored sections:
GRE Test Format |
|
|---|---|
| MATH | » 45 minutes » 28 multiple-choice questions » Problem solving and quantitative comparison |
| VERBAL | » 30 minutes » 30 multiple-choice questions » Sentence completions, antonyms, analogies, and reading comprehension |
| WRITING | » 1 Analysis of an argument essay » 1 Analysis of an issue essay |
In addition, there may be a marketing survey, or one or two experimental sections, which can be Verbal or Quantitative.
How is the GRE Test scored?
Each of the multiple-choice sections is scored on a scale of 200 to 800. The average scores for the GRE are about 460 for Verbal and 600 for Quantitative. The Analytical Writing section is scored on a scale of 0 to 6.
How important are my GRE scores?
Schools vary tremendously in the weights they place on the different factors in the admission process, so be sure to contact the specific schools to which you are applying in order to determine their unique requirements. Some programs weight GRE scores very heavily, and/or have a minimum score for applicants, while other programs consider GRE scores more of a formality. It is important to note that your GRE scores are a major factor in determining your eligibility for financial aid.
Is the GRE an IQ Test?
Absolutely not! If it were, we would not be able to increase your score. There are many test-taking tips and strategies we can teach you that will increase your score and give you your best chance of getting into a top university.
Can I cancel my scores?
Yes. You can cancel your scores immediately after you take the GRE test. This is the only time you can cancel your scores. Unfortunately, you must make the decision to cancel at the testing center before you see your scores. In addition, the fact that you cancelled your scores will be noted on your official GRE score report.
How do I pick a test date?
In China, the GRE is only offered twice a year, once in October and once in June. (Here's the current schedule for Asia). Given the limited options for taking the test, it's best to plan ahead and make sure you're ready for the test on your test date.
What fees are associated with the GRE Test?
In China, the fee to take the GRE test is USD205. When you register you should know what schools you plan on applying to since you can send four scores for free. After the test date (or for more than four schools) you can send additional score reports to schools for USD23 each.
What are the GRE Subject Tests?
The GRE Subject Tests are intended to measure your knowledge of specific subject matter. Subject Tests are available in eight disciplines: biochemistry, cell and molecular biology; biology; chemistry; computer science; literature in English; mathematics; physics; and psychology. These tests are given in paper-and-pencil format three times per year, in October, November, and April (current schedule). Before making plans, make sure that the test center you are planning on taking the test at is offering your test on your desired date.
These tests are given separately from the GRE General Test and require additional fees. Currently the price of the subject test is USD160. Check with the graduate schools to which you are applying to determine whether any of these extra tests are required.
Where can I get more information about the GRE Test?
You can contact us here at The Princeton Review, or you can contact the Educational Testing Service (ETS) through their website: www.gre.org. You can get more information about the subject tests including free books here.
